A first glance at this image and I thought of how relationships can be a double-edged sword providing both security and confinement. I'm sure most of us can relate to the feeling of suffocation in an abstract or metaphorical sense. Some people, no matter how well-intentioned, simply suffocate the life out us. They somehow manage to rob us of that vital life-force needed to create, play, or express. As I looked closer at the king's face, I could see signs of devotion and desperation to hold onto someone he has strong feelings towards. But, first impressions don't always tell the whole story and curiosity forced me to find out the real intention of this piece of work.Read More
ALLEGORY IN ART
There were two reasons I was drawn to this image. The first was the obvious; I felt a connection to the picture itself. The second was more of a kick in the solar plexus from the cosmos, or whoever else is in charge of those random synchronistic events which leave you wondering what the fuck you did to be taunted so mercilessly by life itself. Kasia Derwinska will often post a video in the comment underneath the image; underneath this particular image was a clip to the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. No doubt chosen for its subject matter of erasing memory. Although, for me, it just made it all the more personal, but I'll leave that til later.
She's right of course, Kasia, I mean; memories last only as long as we want to keep them.Read More
How harsh on the emotions is this image? Or is it the addition of the title which helps to nail its impact? I felt like I'd been thumped when I first laid eyes on this picture, although there was probably more than a little projection taking place. It certainly made me think hard, and I couldn't help but wonder if that song gives away any clues to the reason for the break-up or the emotional states of the people involved. I've known many songs which speak of the impending doom a separation can bring, but how many times do we notice the last one associated with a particular person?Read More
There is nothing obvious in this picture which suggests anything of solid predictive value, it's a snapshot of where things are at in an instant. And at face value, it all looks pretty hopeless.
I've long-since been suspicious of umbrellas. I don't mean suspicious in the superstitious sense, just suspicious of the symbolism. In their own way, they're deceiving; they offer scant protection against a hard storm and are really only good for light showers without any wind. Umbrellas are a common object in art and their overall symbolic meaning represents a level of protection; as to whether that protection is adequate or insufficient, we need to look at it in context within the bigger picture.Read More
Now and again, I come across an image which is a little different to what usually draws my attention. These days - more often than not it'll represent a once familiar tune which no longer plays, but the memory of the dance it inspired will rattle through my body...sometimes creating discomfort, at other times joy. The above picture is one such example which provides provocation of an old memory. I find myself unsettled at the sight of it, yet I choose to keep looking and let my mind wonder, and wander, as I patiently wait for my head to connect with the soul self.
I glance back up at the screen, and I'm thinking about the symbolic meaning of swan, and how their interpretation is likely to be varied between countries.Read More
